The Virtual International White Cane Day 2020 was held successfully on Saturday, 10 October 2020 at 2pm. The Guest of Honour is Mr Edwin Tong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth and Second Minister for Law.

The International White Cane Day is celebrated worldwide on 15 October every year with the mission to educate the world about blindness and how the visually impaired can live and work independently while giving back to their communities, to celebrate the abilities and successes achieved by blind people in a sighted world and to honour the many contributions made by the visually impaired.

The SG Enable Training & Career Fair for Persons with Disabilities

Our Flag Day this year goes virtual. The objectives of our Flag Day 2020 are two-fold; to raise much needed funds for supporting programmes for our clients, and to create awareness of our mission & vision statements while inspiring the spirit of inclusiveness in our community.

Festive Season Amazing “Raise” – Saturday, 11 January 2020

Festive Season Amazing Raise

This financial year 2019-2020, has without fail been eventful so far. In view of SAVH’s Festivity of Giving, we are grateful and appreciate your generosity to mark the coming festive season. To celebrate the festive season with kindness and giving, we are organising a fundraising event called ‘Festive Season Amazing “Raise”‘ to be held on Saturday, 11 January 2020. Visually handicapped clients will participate alongside donor participants or volunteers on a unique journey of fundraising race with festive activities; starting from SAVH and moving along a route encompassing stopovers at a few selected places of interests during festivities around the island. The four selected places will include Bugis, Little India, Holland Village and Chinatown for their cultural association to the four major festivals of Hari Raya Puasa, Deepavali, Christmas and Chinese New Year.

For those who have supported SAVH in the past, we thank you for your continued support. Your gift is an extremely important one as it offers immediate resources that are directed to our new initiatives and on-going programmes and services.

The International White Cane Day 2019 will be held on Saturday, 12 October 2019 at SAVH premises.

VI Sports Awareness Carnival Launch – 15 June 2019

VI Sports Awareness

Visually Impaired Sports Awareness Carnival 2019 is jointly organised by SAVH, Singapore National Eye Centre, Singapore Disability Sports Council and People’s Association Youth Movement. The Official Launch date of the event is scheduled on Saturday, 15 June 2019, 1-3pm at SAVH premises.

Our visually impaired clients are invited to the launch to learn about and try on the sports. Sports booths will be setup for Ten-pin Bowling, Tandem Cycling, Goalball, Guided Run (Athletics) and Laser Shooting. For more information, check out at here

Goodie bags will be given to registered clients. Free gifts and prizes will be distributed while stocks last. In addition, high tea reception will be provided.

Greetings from the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH)!

We truly appreciate your past and continuous support of our Flag Day Event over the years!

Our coming Flag Day is scheduled on Saturday, 9 June 2018 from 8 am to 5 pm. We are pleased to inform that once again we shall be adopting the Buddy System, whereby sighted volunteers can opt to be paired with our visually handicapped clients, therefore making Flag Day an even more exciting and meaningful affair.

We are happy to announce that once again there shall be 7 Reporting Centres for your selection and convenience: HQ at SAVH premises (47 Toa Payoh Rise), Toa Payoh HDB Hub, Woodlands MRT Station, Jurong East MRT Station, Serangoon NEX MRT Station, Bugis MRT Station and Tampines Mall.

The objectives of SAVH’s Flag Day 2018 are two-fold; to raise much needed funds for supporting programmes for our clients, and to create awareness of our mission & vision statements while inspiring the spirit of volunteerism and inclusiveness in our community.

Voiceover for iPad and iPhone
Explore more about the assistive technology of VoiceOver for iPad or iPhone. For people who are blind or have vision loss, Voiceover lets you hear a description of what’s happening on your screen. We’ll navigate shortcuts, and discover how to adjust speaking and pitch rate.

Voiceover for Mac
For people who are blind and have low vision, discover great ways to use VoiceOver on your Mac. We’ll show you how VoiceOver gives you customizable control without needing to see the screen.

iPad and iPhone with Vision Loss
Discover how to interact with iPad and iPhone if you have vision loss. We’ll share assistive features like how to improve readability by activating Larger Dynamic Type. Magnifier makes an object easier to see, while Speak Selection and Speak Screen can read contents of the screen to you.

Using Mac with Vision Loss
Discover the different ways to interact with Mac for those with vision loss. This session will explore assistive technologies like Zoom, and some of its capabilities. We’ll help you start a document in Pages using Zoom or ask Siri to perform a search for documents in Finder.

Literacy Tools on iPad and iPhone
Discover how iOS can help to strengthen reading and spelling skills. Join us as we share how your iPad and iPhone can read just what’s highlighted or all the text on screen. We’ll demonstrate how Speak Screen and Speak Selection can read the content back to you, and explore Look Up and all it offers. We’ll show how to open Dictionary, Wikipedia, and the web by holding down on a word or phrase.

Photo Walks: Balancing Light and Dark with JiaQuan Lu

Join JiaQuan Lu, co-founder of imaginem, in support of Global Accessibility Awareness Day. He’ll share how black and white filters add impact to a story and help people with visual impairments experience photography. Then you’ll head out with iPhone to explore the balance of light and dark and the subtleties of contrast. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a fully charged device. This walk is 2 km.
