The Dining in the Dark experience, organised by the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH), aims to raise public awareness about the daily challenges faced by persons with vision impairment. It offers sighted participants a unique opportunity to experience dining without sight — and without the use of blindfolds.
Inspired by the renowned Blindekuh (Blind Cow) restaurant in Switzerland, where visually impaired staff serve guests in complete darkness, SAVH has adapted this meaningful concept locally. At SAVH, our visually impaired clients are specially trained to prepare and serve set-course meals as servers and kitchen assistants. Through this initiative, they are given an opportunity to earn an income, gain confidence, and integrate more fully into the community!

The Experience
As patrons, you will not be able to rely on your sense of sight during this session — instead, we invite you to immerse yourself through your other senses: taste, touch, smell, and hearing. This unique experience promises to be both eye-opening and memorable, offering a deeper appreciation of the unseen world.
While you will eventually regain your vision after the lights are turned on, persons with visual impairment live in darkness every day. Beyond the loss of sight, they face ongoing challenges in education, employment, mobility, and relationships — constantly adapting to situations that most of us take for granted. At SAVH, we are committed to supporting and empowering the visually impaired community, helping them bridge these gaps and lead fulfilling, independent lives.

At Dining in the Dark at SAVH, guests have celebrated birthdays, wedding proposals, corporate bonding sessions, and meaningful get-togethers — all in complete darkness. We hope that through this one-of-a-kind experience, you’ll be inspired to share your insights with family, friends, and colleagues, and develop a deeper sense of understanding and empathy towards persons with visual impairment — making every encounter a chance to see beyond sight.
